Visiting the Lake District...

Last month we spent a lovely week in the Lake District. We enjoy holidays abroad, but let’s face its, you can’t beat a UK break when the weather's in your favour, and it’s nice to have a holiday with the fluffy ones.

We’ve been to Cumbria a few times now and have visited many of the usual haunts, so we were keen to explore some different areas of this beautiful part of the world.
We chose to stay further north, and booked a lovely holiday cottage near Penrith surrounded by rolling hills and fields and plenty of exceptionally vocal sheep.
Our mornings were very often spent deciphering their conversations!

We headed to Coniston, Ambleside and Pooley Bridge, took a journey on a Loco to Haverthwaite, witnessed glorious waterfalls at Aira Force and drove the winding roads of Kirkstone Pass and around Ullswater, but top of my 'to see' list was Buttermere, and I have to say, I definitely left a little piece of my heart there.
This place is something else, truly.
After a lovely lunch at Skye Farm Tea Rooms, we headed off to walk the 4.5 miles around Buttermere Lake, stopping to meet the local sheep on route, and a little toe dipping.
It’s such a calm and tranquil place with the most breathtaking views around the lake. We’ll definitely be visiting again that’s for sure!

And it wouldn’t be a trip to the Lake District without a quick stop in Grasmere to pick up some sought after gingerbread, yum!

On my bookshelf...Amelia Earhart

Written by MarĂa Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Mariadiamantes, the Amelia Earhart edition of Little People, Big Dreams is a must for your little ones bookshelf.
It's no secret, I'm a huge fan of this series of books, having featured them several times on the blog before and there are plenty of new titles coming out soon so look out for Georgia O'Keefe, Jane Austen and Anne Frank published later this year.

This book tells the story of the most famous female pilot of the 20th century, Amelia Earhart.
Having an interest in planes from an early age, she learnt how to fly one and then bought her very own six months later.
She then went on to set a new women's world record, was the first person to fly over the Atlantic and then flew solo across the Pacific Ocean.
Quite the career... and all beautifully detailed and illustrated throughout.

What else is there to do other than begin an investigation...

On my bookshelf... Hortense and the Shadow

Hortense and the Shadow is the haunting debut picture book by two very talented sisters, Natalia and Lauren O'Hara.
Editing scripts during the day, but by night they draw and write together, and a fantastic duo it is too!
With beautiful inky illustrations throughout, the book tells the story of Hortense, a brave little girl with a dislike for her shadow.
"Everywhere she went, it went. Everything she did, it did".
But one night in the woods when she comes across some bandits, she soon realises she is better with, than without it, and her shadow saves the day.

A fairytale about light and shadow, you will surely be mesmerized by all the gorgeous wintery touches and decorative architectural details on every page.
A must for your bookshelf...

On my bookshelf...In the Darkness of the Night

I shared the lovely book 'A Dogs Day' by Emily Rand on the blog previously, and today I've got her lovely new book 'In the Darkness of the Night'.

Taking us on a journey through the night, with rhyming text throughout,
Emily's gorgeous illustrations give an insight into bed times, long days, night owls
and early morning risers.
People getting home late from work, parents tidying up after their children, friends heading out for a fun night out and birdsong as a new day begins.

Such a lovely book!

Attingham Park...

We had a lovely day at Attingham Park last weekend.
Perfect for getting into autumn mode...a nice long walk whilst on the lookout for deers, a wander around the walled gardens spotting pumpkins, beetroot and gigantic cabbages, aswell as making friends with some rather beautiful looking cows.
Just enough time for a quick stop off in the National Trust shop and second hand bookshop.
Perfect!
